    Upcoming Topics - Volunteers Needed!

TOPICS: Hour of Code—Wednesday and Thursday, December 5 & 6 (date/time for each class TBD)
Organized by a national non-profit dedicated to expanding all kids’ access to computer science, the “Hour of Code” TOPICS day includes age-appropriate activities to expose students to basic concepts of coding. Parent volunteers do not need coding experience - just patience and a desire to help our students learn.

    TOPICS: Day of Service—Friday, January 25, 12:10-3:10 p.m.
A very special TOPICS day dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr's legacy as a champion of social justice and community service. Volunteers are needed to plan and lead activities for 1st-5th grade students. Don't miss this opportunity to make a difference. Some ideas get you thinking and planning:

    • Volunteer at University Food Bank
    • Explore Young Immigrant Stories to help students appreciate diversity
    • Learn about Tent Cities and prepare kits or food for people who live there
    • Invite someone from your favorite community service organization to present

Contact Kathy at topics@topsk8.org to volunteer for either of these special Topics!

Save the Date for School Concert, Dec 11th

To help inform the work of the committee, SPS families and teachers are invited to complete this 10-15 minute ‘Needs Assessment Survey’ to share what is important to them in science instruction: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SPSNeedsSurvey-Community

    Remember to Replenish Lunch Funds

Parents, please remember to check and keep your student's lunch account replenished with funds as we have many students currently have a minus balance.

    Check Lost & Found

When visiting the school for Parent/Teacher conferences, don’t forget to check the Lost and Found located outside the cafeteria entrance! It’s bursting with lost items that will be removed and donated soon.

Take Care of Your Community: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

Talk to your students about these good health habits to help stop the spread of germs and illnesses:

    • Avoid close contact from others when you are sick or with people who are sick.
    • Stay home when sick — whenever possible — to prevent the spread of illness.
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
    • Clean your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work, or school especially when someone is ill.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs, then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
    • Practice other good health habits like getting plenty of sleep, being physically active, managing stress, eating nutritious food and drinking plenty of fluids.
